Wichita is right in the heart of the United States and right at the point
where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers join together. Native Americans
still gather at this inviting and mystical spot. The "Keeper of the
Plains," a majestic and commanding figure, created by the late Wichita
artist Blackbear Bosin, now marks this historic spot.
The Wichita Indians, who lived in this area, gave our
city its historic name. Later, settlers discovered this land of subtle
beauty, good earth, water and an abundance of wildlife, which was to
be named Sedgwick County. The city's boundaries now encircle 110 square
miles, yet the rivers remain the principal gathering point of the metroplex.
